Yikes. I'd be scared to lay my groceries out like that and see it all at once. I like the american family that a stalk of broccoli and 2 potatoes as their total veggies for the week. And the lined up soda......

There is so much economic mumbo-jumbo as to what that dollar means all over the world, lumping us into one big pile does nothing to help things. If this scale were "calories consumed per year" THEN I'd think we'd see how "rich" we are. There are some people that survive on far less food than we throw out in a single day. Check this out: http://www.time.com/time/photogallery/0,29307,1626519,00.html An interesting series of photographs on what families subsist on throughout the world. We are really rich/fat, and I don't mean greenbacks.

Very sobering when even as "poor college students" we make the top 3%. I always knew there was poverty of course. I don't think I've ever realized as fully just how many really poor people there are in the world. Thanks for helping me think about something important today.

Tried it - it is humbling - a bit upsetting. I threw in some combos from past incomes - starting out when I felt constantly strapped for cash - growing up when I knew I was spoiled..... Very enlightening... Makes you think....

It is so hard to know when you should do something else. I was really wondering about this earlier in the year but a friend talked me out of it, particularly when she realized that my kid gets good grades, gets along with classmates, etc... If your kiddo is doing that stuff too maybe it's just something he/she will grow out of and the impt thing is to stay sane in the meantime. :) Internet hug!
fyi I really love your blog. Just the writing style alone makes me want to read but then there's content: relevant, interesting, funny. If it stresses you out you should stop but selfishly I would be so sad if you did.

It was #2 for a long time. He used to have the worst tantrums and still gets pretty worked up but #3 has taken over the coveted position of (in Curt's words) little sh*t disturber. They both have strong personalities & love to tag team (when one is misbehaving the other decides to cooperate- arghh!) I'm really trying not to label as well... but the problem is I'm verbal. When I love you I tell you all the time. When I'm po'ed your gonna hear about it.

Character building? Yes, that's my angle exactly. They'll thank me someday, right! This family therapist just gave a talk at stake conference and encouraged us to have a 5:1 ratio of positive to negative interactions with our spouse and children. So that's what I'm trying this week. Stay tuned for next week's "big idea!"

We've talked about it quite a bit. The thing is, this kid doesn't have problems at school. Gets along with teacher and kids really well. I think the school would think I was crazy. I'm afraid to say it out loud, but there has been some mellowing of late.

AB, I could be wrong, but I really think you have an exceptionally hard case on your hands. I totally admit we all have a problem kid/s. Mine are gender specific, boys are definitely harder than the girls. Whining, tantrums, refusing to do what's asked... I go through cycles with parenting books. It's hard b/c when I try to apply something the book says and it doesn't work it really gets to me. There has to be something or someone out there that can help alleviate your daily frustrations. First thing that comes to mind is school psych and behavior mod. stuff because of my profession, but I sort of hate our school psych right now so I wouldn't listen to anything she says. What does BEB think? I'm sure you've hashed over it.
